The Shadow Emergency Services Minister Brad Battin has announced that if elected in November, the Liberal National Coalition would build the new Shepparton Fire Station at the CFA’s preferred site at Karibok Park.
Speaking during an inspection of the site in Archer Street, Mr Battin was joined by Member for Northern Victoria Wendy Lovell and Liberal candidate for Shepparton Cheryl Hammer and reiterated the Coalition’s support for a new station to be built.
Mr Battin said funding for the new station had been allocated for well over 12 months and Shepparton firefighters were frustrated by the inaction of the Andrews Labor Government and Emergency Services Minister James Merlino to secure the site and get construction underway.
The existing Shepparton Fire Station is nearly 50 years old, it no longer meets minimum standards and the station needs to be relocated to a site outside of the CBD for the safety of both firefighters and pedestrians.
The CFA’s preferred site at Karibok Park is Crown land managed by Greater Shepparton City Council and Mr Battin called on the Minister for Emergency Services James Merlino to stop procrastinating and get on with building the station – the first step of which is to name a site.
Mr Battin said that if the Liberal National Coalition were elected in November, he would work with the CFA, Council and other stakeholders to prioritise the building of the new fire station.
