A Liberal Nationals Government will establish the Goulburn Corridor Growth Authority as a part of our plan to decentralise jobs and growth across Victoria.
Daniel Andrews has lost control of population growth. Melbourne’s population has already passed 5 million and is growing at an average of 2,700 people a week.
That’s why a Liberal Nationals Government will grow all of Victoria and not just focus on Melbourne so we become a state of cities and not a city state.
Establishing a Goulburn Corridor Growth Authority is one of the planks in our plan to decentralise jobs and population.
At today’s announcement, Leader of The Nationals and Shadow Minister for Regional Victoria and Decentralisation, Peter Walsh said,
“A Liberal Nationals Government will take back control of population growth and make sure we have the right growth, in the right places, at the right time.
We won’t repeat the failures of past State Governments that failed to plan for and invest in the infrastructure that will ensure regional Victoria continues to thrive.
That’s why we’ve already announced that under a Liberal Nationals Government there will be a Population Commission providing the State Government with advice. There will also be a Minister for Population and a Minister for Decentralisation.”
The Hume regional growth plan has already identified Seymour and Shepparton as areas of importance for future population growth.
These population centres are strategically located and well connected. There is already a framework of infrastructure, services and commerce opportunities that can be further developed to support future growth.
Seymour is uniquely placed in terms of rail services, situated just below the intersection of the North East and the Shepparton lines.
It is the southern gateway to the Goulburn Valley, one hour by road to Shepparton and 90 minutes by road to Melbourne along the Hume and Goulburn Valley Highways.
The Authority will be chaired by respected lawyer and businessman Andrew Fairley AM who has long established family and commercial connections to both the Seymour and Shepparton areas.
We’ll provide $14.86 million for the Authority, with staff to be based in Seymour.
The Liberal Nationals have already committed to delivering High Speed Rail for regional Victoria which will include upgrades to all existing lines.
As part of our plans for rapid development and improvement of regional rail services, a Liberal Nationals Government will go to market to find the best option for developing a high speed direct rail link between Seymour and Melbourne.
